Having used both Garmin and Polar heart rate monitors whilst running I went for the Polar option for cycling. Although initially quite hard to set up, especially attaching the mount to my Specialized Elite, it works well. I have the heart rate monitor, the speed sensor and the cadence monitor.
The distance recorded is spot on, the full 12.5 miles to work, which I have also measured using the GMAP pedometer website. The display is a good size and fully customisable. There are a number of display settings also but I have the heart rate, cadence, speed and time all on one. This gives me the full picture of how I am performing at once.
The only issue is elctromagnetic interference, there is a 2 mile section on the Regents canal where speed and cadence do not work. I now have a route that avoids this section so problem solved.
I have not used the training programme function as the ride to work is generally taken up by concentrating on the road, cars and traffic lights. However I plan to use this on some recently purchased rollers for some interval training.
The main benefit of the monitor is that it allows me to track improvement in performance, and tells me when I am slacking. A number of times I have been “powering” up hill to find my heart rate hovering just above normal, this is time to push harder, if the legs can take it.
Finally the interface with the training software works well. You do needs a USB stick to allow the infa red to work. It loads the recent data onto the software, which can then be analysed graphically if you want to.
All in all the Polar CS400 is a great product.
